My first impressions on the MLP Movie

Right off the bat I feel this movie had very bad pacing. It feels very much like entire scenes are missing leaving it with a very strange flow. It's funny because the show itself very rarely suffers from this issue. I get it's a movie made for kids but this is something I expected the series to abandon after 7 seasons with its higher quality of writing since season 1!

It doesn't even feel like it fits within the actual canon of the show as a lot of major characters are either glorified cameos like Discord or not even mentioned like Starlight Glimmer. Y'know Starlight should've gotten a mention if this is after season 7! Also why isn't Twilight using her magic more effiently like Teleport spamming or Energy blasts? I know you can do this! She didn't hesitate to use magic against Tirek or Starlight, why not against Tempest? Also where were characters like the Changelings and Princess Ember? Fuck, not even the CMC got to appear much!

With that said the movie characters are pretty fun. Tempest is more or less what Starlight should've been from the beginning and I hope she appears in the show proper. A badass cripple with a legitimately tragic past and real reasoning for her actions. The Storm King was pretty funny sometimes even if he was basically just Discord fused with Tirek. Capper? He was fucking sweet and gets the best song in the movie, essentially Friend Like Me if it was sung by Jafar. And I have to admit the animation is pretty spectacular but that's like saying a shower feels nice.

So basically: great animation, decent movie characters and environments, but a severe lack of real action, forced plot convenience, no other characters from the show we've come to really know, lack of explanation of where the villains came from, the Storm King wasnt even really dangerous unlike Tirek when he got Alicorn Magic... and the action, while nice still didn't use the characters to their full potential. It's nowhere near as big a joke as the original MLP Movie from 1987 but the Equestria Girls films do this stuff much better.

So yeah I'm not surprised this is Bombing like the Hindenburg. When you release on the same day as the Blade Runner sequel what do you think is gonna happen? It's exactly what happened with the last 2D Disney films but more justified since those had better quality.

In the defense of that, the movie started production around the start of season 5 before the Changeling redemption and Ember's introduction and the CMC gaining their cutie marks and being before the show properly mapped out seasons 6-7 so that could by why they don't show up, may also account for Starlight and Trixie being reduced to cameos instead of major roles.

Plus keep in mind they were having to accommodate for casual movie audiences who may not have seen the latest episodes of Friendship is Magic so that does explain things.
