This is a battle that was well worth the wait! Throughout his journey through Kanto, Ash was essentially handed 5 of his badges through contrivance or because they couldn't afford for him to lose more than once at the time. Out of the 3 gyms where Ash earned a badge legitimately, the Cinnabar Island gym battle has to be the most epic, and definitely the greatest battle of the Indigo League series. The first battle Ash has with Blaine kept everybody who saw it on the edge of their seats, given the battles in question took place either in or OVER a MOTHER BLEEPING VOLCANO! You have to figure the battles either way are going to be intense as all hell, and by gum do they deliver!

The better of these two episodes is Volcanic Panic. When Team Rocket end up botching another theft and end up crunking up Blaine's gym, the whole gang's gotta stop a volcano from wrecking the whole island! Their teamwork is just amazing, especially when lazy bum Charizard finally shows Ash even an inkling of respect and gives Magmar a helping claw in plugging up a ERPUTING VOLCANO! GOD DAMN THIS EPISODE IS AWESOME!

Now, we all expected Ash to just be handed the badge for saving Blaine's gym and the entire island, and he is more than deserving of it this time around, even if Team Rocket caused the mess; THAT is a true act of heroism! But, in one very funny moment, Blaine just tells him he was gonna offer him ANOTHER CHANCE TO BATTLE for the Volcano Badge, it is a lot funnier than I make it out to be.

Now since the inside of the Volcano completely destroyed Blaine's gym he and Ash decide on a 1-on-1 battle one the VERY RING OF THE VOLCANO ITSELF! Ash almost goes with Pikachu again, but in a shocking turn of events Charizard offer to battle Magmar for him, since he saw Magmar's determination and heart when plugging the volcano, he wanted to be the one to test his strength against such a worthy Fire Pokemon. This battle is beautifully animated, this episode is where the animation of the series really started to shine, considering it's only a few episodes before the First Movie you better improve this shows looks! Things really get epic when Magmar DRAGS Charizard down INTO THE VERY HEART OF THE VOLCANO ITSELF! And with a burst of pure awesome Charizard end the battle in victory for Ash with a mighty SEISMIC TOSS!

If there's one thing I didn't like about these episodes, it's that this is the episode that makes Charizard go from lazy, to a sociopath obsessed with his own power. If they had made Charizard actually start to trust Ash from here, it would've made future events turn out nowhere near as bad (talking about Friend or Foe Alike). I'll get more into Charizard when I review Charizard Chills and Charizard's Burining Ambitions. All in all this battle is in my top 3 of all time.

Personally, I think Ash should've caught Aerodactyl from the Prehistoric Pokémon episode and use it to fight Blaine's Magmar.
