Now this is an interetsing little pilot, and owned by the people behind such shows as Fairly Oddparents and Adventure Time no less! Frankly I'm surprised nobody beforehand has done an entry in this, especially after RebelTaxi mentioned it in an top 5 dropped pilots video.
The creator of this pilot is Patrick McHale's wife, you know, the guy who made Over the Garden Wall. He also helped write this short, you can defintiely see his influence from both Flapjack and Adventure Time in there along with the aforementioned Over the Garden Wall. Being that it originated on the Internet means that it did not have to appeal to network standards, or to a certain audience or age group, allowing it a very dark tone with a very peculiar sense of humor. The animation itself isn't that impressive compared to Bravest Warriors and it isn't Over the Garden Wall, but like Deadtime Stories it is clearly a stylistic choice that works very well.
The pure atmosphere of this short gives it the feel of a real mystery novel, and it manages to maintain that tone throughout. One thing of note is the shorts compositon, by positioning the characters and objects to make recognizable silhouettes, you can make the shot itself more pleasing to the viewer, vastly making up for the art style. Like RebelTaxi I can really see the similarities between this and Over the Garden Wall, to the point where a crossover wouldn't have been that surprising. I feel the short could've been expanded into a short miniseries like Over the Garden Wall to expand on the mystery itself, but what we're given is beautiful in and of itself.
