You know the phrase "So close and yet so far"? That sums up my thoughts about this episode perfectly. If it were handled just a bit better, it could've been an admirable animation. Think about it. We see beyond Richard being a fat, bumbling waste of space; yes, he's essentially mentally crippled and an embarrassment to life, but there once was a time where he at least TRIED to be a good father. He even gave Gumball Darwin as a Christmas present, for Christ’s sake! A plot about giving the bumbling dad depth and showing that they weren't always like that is a brilliant idea for a Gumball episode. Honestly, I don't hate Richard as much as everybody else does; any I do have is mostly because of the episode "The Laziest", but that's another review. Now we get into what makes this episode fail, and fail badly.

Gumball basically makes fun of his dad for, well, being his dad. We've seen clearly that he's the ultimate example of the bumbling dad in television. Although, unlike Fred Flintstone, Homer Simpson or Peter Griffin, Richard actually has a legitimate reason for being so stupid, as evidenced in the episode "The Authority" (and I will review that episode, so don't worry). Understandably, Anais and Nicole are mad at Gumball and Darwin for making Richard cry. The problem here is they've also made fun of Richard for his incompetence multiple fucking times, so it comes off as the girls ganging up on the boys for making fun of daddy and being hypocritical bitches.

Nicole outright refuses to TAKE CARE OF Gumball and Darwin until they apologize to Richard for honestly telling the truth, harsh though it was. She doesn't even let them shower or EAT! You cold, heartless c**t! The boys have to resort to eating expired food and nearly get mauled by a fucking rat because all them food they DID manage to get was about to expire that very day. They aren't even allowed to ride the bus because they smell like used diapers! They do try playing blatant child abuse for laughs and they were actually close to making it funny, but Jesus Christ, they missed the mark by that much!

Another problem this episode has is it wants me to basically believe Richard shouldn't change who he is so that people will treat him better when he's really just a lazy burden on his family. He can never better himself or get a job or the universe will collapse; that's what the episode "The Job" establishes anyways and that episode aired two whole episodes after this, but the point still stands. That being said, Richard's song "My Little Ones" is actually pretty beautiful. And through old photos, we do see that he was a decent father to Gumball and Darwin, and all the photos are from before Anais was born by the way, so you can take this to mean whatever the fuck you want. But it almost made me forget that "The Laziest" established him to be very, very manipulative despite being a moron; nice try fat-ass, but a song will only get you so much sympathy from me. You want people to respect you? Lose some fucking weight and go back to school starting from Kindergarten! I'm sorry; do I sound like an asshole? I'm only stating the truth, and now you see the big problem with the episode.

Darwin actually does try to make Richard feel like a hero, by putting himself and Gumball in mortal danger and having Richard save them. To be fair, he didn't count on the magnet remote getting caught in the magnet, but that has to be the stupidest thing they've ever done. Darwin keeps going on and on about how Richard will save them, but he only keeps fucking shit up! Gumball is actually in the right for insulting his own father while he's about to die in a compactor, so you've FAILED! I know Richard is just trying to help save his children, but he's not a hero; if anything, he's the villain here. And we're actually supposed to sympathize with the fact that he's useless! Honestly, Gumball doesn't deserve the abuse here; even though he sounds like a little ungrateful prick, he's actually very much right in his assessment of his father. Richard tries to save the kids, but he's the one who needs saving! Honestly, this episode feels like something from King of the Hill: very manipulative and backhanded. The universe saves Richard's fat ass so it looks like he saved his kids, and I will never cry for this recklessness and brain dead stupidity.

This plot can only work if it permanently develops the idiot and makes him more useful; Richard just ends up being a stupid failure in the end despite everything he went through! So yes, this episode is extremely manipulative and backhanded. It spits in the face of anybody who loves Gumball, and I am willing to call it the worst episode of the show. Not for lack of trying though, the plot COULD have worked, but the show relies on a weird development/status quo mix thingy: Gumball can develop but not too much; Darwin's flaws are one episode things that persist throughout the show; and Richard must always be fat and useless.

I really wish that Gumball would just eventually get understandably angry at his family and calls Anais and Nicole out for all of the bull crap they've put him through, all because they'd wanted him and Darwin to appreciate his "parents", and to add in insults and injury, Richard wasn't really a hero to begin with, he was just a bumbling Dad that loves him everything he looks up to him. And Gumball also should've snap at Darwin for being such a bad friend to him who for some reason directly put him and his Dad in danger in the junkyard, which was a VERY dangerous thing to do, an adopted best friend wouldn't do that to his buddy, as proven in heartwarming endings on episodes like "The Third", "The Picnic" and "The Words". And I officially put this episode to "Everything infamously bad happens to Gumball" episode.

Man.... after years of being locked out of the house of someone who steal his life, being laughed at, nearly abused by his parents and literally denied on food and the shower, my favorite boy Gumball is going to need some serious therapy and a really long talk with Penny about his rotten bad luck he had to go through.
