Animated Atrocities: Imposter's Home for Um... Make 'Em Up Pals

Show: Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends
Episode: S3 E4
Year: 2005

Writer(s): Craig Lewis
Director(s): Chris Dent

Wow, this kid is a bigger asshole than Bloo! And I call him “kid” instead of “imaginary friend” because I kind of feel like the ending was originally supposed to have him ousted as a fraudulent figment’s friend! All of the evidence we see throughout the episode points to “Goofball” John McGee as a genuine human teenager and not an imaginary friend! I mean, yes it's POSSIBLE that an imaginary friend could go for a driver’s license and go to school. I'm not going to rule that out considering we've seen some imaginary friends with jobs; hell, Mr. Herriman himself runs Foster’s! But given his sarcastic lying tone, his general jerkass behavior and the fact that he in general resembles your stereotypical slacker teenager, all evidence points to Goofball being a human!

This episode is also a Frankie Foster torture porn, and that's the least of the episodes problems. All she wanted to do was go to a concert because she herself admits she only gets 1-2 days off from Foster's a month, and she basically is the janitor for Foster's most of the year! She wasn’t being an asshole or rubbing it in anyone's faces, nor was she trying to guilt-trip anyone. The worst thing she does is threatening Bloo after he filled the house with exploding chemicals! And he deserved it! Instead, she has to end up babysitting this obvious faker! I mean, when one of the baby imaginary friends says "I hate you, Frankie!" after she rightfully denies them candy because of Goofball, that guaranteed this episode as an atrocity and that it would only get worse, and Goofball does indeed just keep getting worse.

You know, with an asshole like Duchess, it's obvious why she's stuck at Foster's: nobody would ever adopt her spiteful ugly ass! But I think Foster's should be a bit more intuitive into determining what imaginary friends they do accept as residents; not to be assholes or anything, but with friends like Bendy and this guy coming around, yeah... They give imaginary friends a bad name. Hell, Bloo gives them a bad name, but at least he can be charming sometimes! Goofball is just an asshole with a barely stable lie.

This episode actually reminds me of the King of the Hill Episode “Twas the Nut Before Christmas”; you know, the one where Bill took in a homeless teen that was obviously going to take advantage of him and get him into trouble with the law? What saved that episode was the fact that Bill lost the kid’s trust eventually and let him rot in jail like he deserved. At the very least, we got some form of catharsis out of the episode. We do not get that here in this Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends episode. It doesn't matter if Goofball is an imaginary friend or not, he doesn't get any consequences for being a major pain in Frankie's ass. It doesn't help that Frankie outright proves how gullible everybody in Foster's really is when she pretends to be an imaginary friend. And Goofball is able to recognize her right away; the hypocrisy of this situation isn't funny at all.

BTW, Mr. Herriman is way too tolerant of Goofball, his tomfoolery and his douchebaggery. This same problem persisted in the episode “Everyone Knows It's Bendy” as well, but at least he had an excuse thanks to Bendy's "backstory". My point is Herriman is completely out of character in this episode all just to spite Frankie, it seems, and he does indeed spite her by blaming everything on her. It's no wonder Frankie attacks Goofball with how much of a dick he is and how stupid everybody but Mac is in this episode when they go to the concert while she's stuck at home, homaging Disney's Cinderella! But Mac, being smart, is marred by the fact that he's also an asshole too; he tries to rat out Frankie or "Goof Goof" as a fraud and takes everybody to the concert without her. He's supposed to have a crush on her! Why would he do this?

Barely any of that really matters though, compared to the fact that Frankie seems to only really be needed in this episode not because anybody cares about her, but they need her as their housemaid! They aren't grateful for what she does either; they just want her around because she does stuff for them! Any and all comedy that could've been made from her proving Goofball is a fraud by becoming "Goof Goof" is ruined just by the fact that everybody misses Frankie since she does shit for them.

I have a stinking suspicion the ending was originally meant to reveal Goofball as a fraud, but for some reason, they wanted him to be a real imaginary friend despite all the evidence in the episode saying otherwise! Turns out he had an elephant trunk under that stupid clown nose; I'm not going to ask how you can hide a trunk under a store-bought clown nose because, you know, cartoons. But I am going or ask as to why he even bothered hiding it in the first place beyond contrivance and pulling one of the stupidest twists this show has ever done!

The ending also proved Mr. Herriman is a hypocrite and KNEW Goofball was just wearing a disguise all along! "Nobody would ever be fooled by such a disguise." Bull fucking shit! FRANKIE FOOLED YOU, YA STUPID RABBIT! Unless you really did know she was "Goof Goof" just to shit on her some more. Again, I truly believe Goofball was meant to be human, considering he had to THINK of his name among other reasons! But having him be an imaginary friend just killed any potential the plot had and made Frankie be an asshole and apparently the true antagonist for no reason. Bottom line, “Everybody Hates Frankie” should've been the title of this episode instead.

A real atrocity and fiend that should be erased from existence - Bendy.

Goofball is an angel, compared to Bendy.
