Show: The Powerpuff Girls
Episode: S3 E1a
Year: 2000

Writer(s): Dave Smith

Yes, The Powerpuff Girls was a good show, at least before it entered seasonal rot after its movie. But even before that, it did some pretty stupid things and was not exactly perfect. I mean we all know about the episode “Town and Out” which aired right after this episode and its sister episode “The Mane Event” did. Remember: even good shows can have bad episodes; I've already reviewed a Dexter's Lab episode from Season 2 (its prime season) as an atrocity, and I do plan to review Courage the Cowardly Dog's “Ball of Revenge” in the very near future. Even early SpongeBob has a few weak and debatably atrocious episodes under its belt. Now lets get to what I consider the worst pre-movie episode of PPG.

The idea of having old heroes and/or villains coming out of retirement is a great idea on paper that I believe I've seen done well several times before; hell, El Tigre did this concept beautifully and it was able to use mean-spirited humor very, very well. The big problem here is how feeble and pathetic The Ministry of Pain, as well as Captain Righteous and his sidekick Lefty, are. And as far as I can tell, The Ministry of Pain is just a bunch of regular elderly criminals. Even back in the old days, they didn't have super powers; they don't even try to display any here unlike Captain Righteous, who could AT LEAST hover! Considering Townsville's law enforcement sucked before the Powerpuff Girls were born, I can buy they would be legitimate threats in their younger years. Remember: the Gangrene Gang basically ran Townsville before the Girls were born.

The main problem with this episode is just how stupid everybody is, especially the Girls themselves. And the only character where the stupidity is actually believable is the Mayor, and he's the ONLY character where it's actually sort of funny. Yes, it is important to respect your elders, Blossom; however, you should’ve realized that this does not include elders who are SUPERVILLAINS! I'm pretty sure you can bend the rules for evildoers! With most elderly SUPERVILLAINS like Teen Titans' Mad Mod and Mother Mae-Eye, they have actual powers or other tricks to back up them lacking real strength. The Ministry of Pain are just old and feeble, barely even able to walk, let alone stay awake! The regular police forcefuck, even that fat lazy bastard Mike Brokowski from the later Season 3 episode “Cop Out” could take on all three of these old farts with no effort at all! I understand the Girls are 5 years old, but even Bubbles and Buttercup realize they could beat them easily; the main problem is Blossom and her stupid backwards ideas.

Additionally, it is just painful watching these old folks slogging around like they're still young, either trying to be threatening or heroic. We even see one of The Ministry of Pain break his back trying to lift a small bag of money! Also, the only reason WHY Captain Righteous hated Lefty was because, in the Captain’s own words, “You’re here for all the glory and none of the work!”… That was it. They never gave us visual evidence and/or flashback that would justify the Captain’s reason for hating Lefty; this “excuse” just happened here because they needed it to happen for no good reason. Seeing Lefty shatter his hip and the Captain running to his aid and pausing isn't funny, it's boring and painful! I don't think elderly folks getting abused like this is very funny. Plus, the ending is just a big kick to the nuts: they all end up in a dog-pile and have to be hospitalized, and the news reporter states at the end this ALL could've been prevented if the Powerpuff Girls just saved the day like they are supposed to!

Couple this with the fact that the pacing is pretty damn slow, and you've got an episode that should've STAYED retired! You know an episode that also did superbeings coming out of retirement right? SPONGEBOB'S first Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy episode!

That's it, I am contacting the GSPA about this. Shaming Blossom isn't going to work.
