Show: Xiaolin Chronicles
Episode: 19
Year: 2014

Writer(s): Christy Hui, Mark Zaslove, Peter Saisselin
Director(s): Christelle Naga

I know that Christy Hui talked about wanting to bring back Xiaolin Showdown for years after it ended in 2006, and I originally wanted this so badly! I mean, think about it: with Raimundo Pedrosa having gained the highest rank of Xiaolin Monk as the gang’s leader and Hannibal Roy Bean setting up something WORSE than the end of the world, you'd think the show could've lasted one more season; at least to reach the 65-episode syndication mark. Sadly, this wasn't meant to be as the show ended on what was apparently the greatest Xiaolin Showdown ever as a cliffhanger, never to be resolved. After seeing Xiaolin Chronicles, I now know this was a terrible mistake and that the original show DID in fact have a complete run! I will say Mrs. Hui had high hopes, but a piss-poor execution.

Xiaolin Chronicles was one of those very awkward reboots/continuations with absolutely no identity of its own because it requires you to have watched the original series in order to understand it. But honestly, it's neither of those things; I don’t know what the hell Xiaolin Chronicles is supposed to be! It really wants to be like the old show, but it isn't anywhere near as good. For one, because this show was made in Canada by someone other than Warner Brothers, a lot of elements had to be changed due to copyright; for example, the names of the Shen Gong Wu: instead of Monkey Staff, you have Monkey Spear as one such stupid example. Because of Canadian law and the fact that Tara Strong and Jennifer Hale have citizenship, they were the only actors able to reprise their roles from the old show as Omi and Katnappe. The newer voices are professional VAs, such as David Kaye as Chase Young and Clay Bailey, and Eric Bauza as Raimundo and Jack Spicer, and they're merely ok, but they don't sound right to someone who watched the original show.

Among the other changes this show did was making every Xiaolin Showdown CGI in a TRON-esque style similar to Code Lyoko, and it looks WORSE than Code Lyoko! They altered the personalities of the villains to either dumb them down or simplify them into caricatures of their former selves. Like making Chase Young more blatantly evil and less dignified, or making Jack Spicer swerve between being super competent and dangerous and his usual pathetic self at the drop of a hat. But the worst thing this show did in the vein of Scooby-Doo was add a smaller more annoying Scrappy counterpart of Omi to act as his apprentice. Ping Pong, or Boris Antonio Rolf Jean-Pierre Gaulle LeGrand IV, is AGGRAVATING! He's like Omi if he was on angel dust and a mix breed of every European nationality and Asian stereotype rolled into one hyper package. Yes, despite the racist name, Ping Pong is apparently European, and a mix of all of Europe since he speaks fragments of every language from there as well as English, and his dragon element was WOOD! That's WAY lamer than just having Jack try to reform and give him the element of metal! If you wanted to add another Xiaolin Dragon, just bring back Jermaine! He doesn't even USE HIS ELEMENT!

Because Jack spilled some highly toxic chemicals on Chase Young's pancake, and Chase ate it, he somehow.... makes Chase pregnant.... Ok, that's it, I'm done! I am NOT going through another "Stewie is Enceinte"! ESPECIALLY WHEN IT’S IN A FUCKING KID’S SHOW! Actually no, Chase doesn't end up popping babies from every hole in his body, he lays an egg like a chicken, going so far as to act like one and coddle the thing.... Still creepy as fuck even for him, and out of character. Is he going to crow at the sun like a rooster? Because if he is, there's a risk I'll go mad and break everything in sight! That happens to me sometimes... And all the times that noise is heard by me. BUT I'M NOT CRAZY OR ANYTHING! Well, at least he speaks for the audience: I want to rip my head off too! Also, Jack ends up becoming Omi's BFF (Best Frienemies Forever) because Chase gave him the shaft.

For some reason, Omi thinks this is a Shen Gong Wu, which shouldn't really be possible even in this show. Although according to Dojo, it might be, again since it came from Chase Young, I don't think that's a possibility. Speaking of which, he's absolutely pissed his egg is gone and storms the Xiaolin Temple to get it back. And Jack's main purpose throughout this episode is to be used as a weapon or cat food! COME ON! Even in the old show, he wasn't this much of a butt monkey! And the way Chase's cat army is defeated just looks piss-poor due in part to the cheap Canadian animation. And Jack betrays Omi, stealing the egg because, of course, he does. Seeing Chase Young cry over an egg just looks completely undignified for the lord of evil, like… Plankton levels of pathetic.

You probably want to know who that blue-haired chick is: that's Shadow, Chase’s daughter! Yeah, she was originally a spy sent to raid the Xiaolin Temple and is the reason they had to relocate, and why Master Fung is gone for the most part. She was born from one of Chase's own ribs a la Adam and Eve, or should I say Adam and EVIL! Yet, even with this discovery, she never stops flirting with the guy.... I don’t know if it's to make them more evil, but that's kind of wrong for a kids show. Regardless, the battle for the egg is absolute shit because, again, Canadian animation, what can you do? And the Xiaolin Showdown for the egg takes place in... Chuckie Finster's hell? Either way, it's the weirdest showdown I've ever seen, and with one of the objects being the need to tell jokes, you'd think Omi would be screwed, but he surprisingly does well and wins the egg, however poorly made this was. Oh, and Omi's family? Turns out it's Chase Young! Shouldn't it be Grand Master Dashi who’s his ancestor? How does that make any sense!

This was a mind-fuck of an episode. MPreg*, Chase Young crying, EVIL CLOWN HEADS! What the fuck just happened? What was that egg!? What did Chase Young mean by him being Omi's Family? Fuck if I know! Personally while I think this show is among the worst reboots, remakes, continuations, spinoffs, whatever, it isn't that bad for what it's worth. It's miles better than Teen Titans Go!, and at least it ain't Yo! Yogi or Loonatics Unleashed! It understood the original show, but tried too hard to BE it and not continue from where it left off because of all the changes.

This feels more like someone's bizarre fanfic than an actual episode. Come to think of it, the whole SERIES feels like someone's bizarre fanfic!
