Here's a Tex Avery gem a lot of people don't really think of when they go over the man's accomplishments. Around the 1950s Tex Avery began to peter out as far as being a cartoonist went, his presence was still there but the amazement that came from shorts such as Red-Hot Riding Hood or King-Size Canary was far and fewer as time went on. He became kinda stagnated with the Droopy series by this point, and while Droopy has a couple notable works it's as formulaic as you get. But, while Droopy may be one-note his antagonists had variety to them, most people remember Wolfie from the aforementioned Red-Hot Riding Hood and Blitz Wolf predating the Droopster, but what of Butch the Bulldog?

The only two cartoons i know of where Butch isn't a foil to Droopy is Cock-a-Doodle Dog where he's beating down an obnoxious rooster (it's honestly the only Tex Avery Cartoon I despise) and this one "Magical Maestro" where he shows off them chops! Any cartoon from back in the day that delved into opera was bound to handle some funny shit, whether it came from Bugs Bunny or Tom and Jerry; but most can't say they dealt with a literal magician! When The Amazing Presto gets snubbed off by Butch (as The Great Poochini) he attempts vengeance by taking the place of the conductor, and with a magic wand in-hand you better believe shit gets weird fast! I should warn you that the uncut print uses a couple outdated stereotypes, but they're only in for 30 seconds and their removal in modern prints adds to the weirdness.

This cartoon may not have the honor of being among the 50 Greatest Cartoons, but it got something BETTER! In 1993 it got selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Film Registery! Not to mention it's quick-witted, fast-paced humor really holds up as a big influence to modern animation as Butch is forced to adapt to the magician's magic (and the audiences ire), not to mention that "hair in the projector" gag is always a classic!

Magical Maestro is owned by Warner Brothers and Turner Broadcasting.
