Show: Oh Yeah! Cartoons
Episode: 12b
Year: 1998

Writer(s): Vince Calandra

It’s been quite some time since I last tackled a dropped pilot, so I figured I'd change all that. Oh Yeah! Cartoons is easily one of the best compilation shows ever made going by the sheer volume of what was greenlit and the impact those shows had on Nickelodeon. As bad as it's gotten, you cannot deny The Fairly OddParents is (or was) one of Nickelodeon's most popular shows of all time and has lasted almost 20 years (going by its pilots) for a reason. But what about those one-shot wonders who never even got a chance? Well, that's what's I'm aiming to do more of, and honestly, this might be one of my favorite pilots of the whole bunch.

Fathead is easily one of the longest pilots to come out of Oh Yeah! Cartoons at 11 minutes in length alongside Planet Kate with both the segments make up a whole episode as opposed to the typical 3 shorts format of most episodes. And both were able to use this extra length to tell more fleshed out and detailed stories. I honestly thought I had dreamed this short or confused it for that educational cartoon Cro; then again, nobody remembers that show. It doesn't help that it took until last year for this and Planet Kate to finally get put up online in English; it just goes to show how forgotten so many of these shorts and pilots really are.

The plot itself is your typical test of manhood and all that, but where this short shines is its animation, visuals and characters. This is one of the few times I've really seen a cartoon able to pull off the whole cavemen and dinosaurs thing and not have to seem out of place at all, and it helps those dinosaurs have wicked awesome designs; not the level of detail Cadillacs and Dinosaurs had, but this would make a BITCHIN' album cover! A lot of that charm comes from Fathead himself being one of the smartest Cro-Magnon children in a tribe full of, well, typical stupid cavemen. Yes, this is one of those cartoons where the kids are smarter than the adults, but I think it really works here as a way to show the new generation has a way of being better developed than the old; for all we know, you'd believe a kid could've actually discovered fire!

This test of manhood, in case you didn't know, is stealing an egg from a T-Rex and getting it back to the tribe. With how dumb the adults in the tribe are, you'd be genuinely surprised how any of them got an egg without getting eaten! The kids figure that it would actually be a lot easier just to chest the system to avoid getting killed, with Fathead himself kind of not wanting to ruin tradition. Oog Jr., the son of Lord Amur, didn't in fact get his egg, but had a caveman named Pogo snatch one for him, and well, let's just say Pogo hasn't been the same dancer since... so there's a big chance Fathead will become Nohead!

I don't think I need to say how badass it is to outwit a Tyrannosaurus, but it is so badass! It helps Fathead actually has a pet Pterosaur to save his ass which only makes this cooler! And if you're wondering, Oog Jr. gets exactly what he deserves for cheating his test as well, but I won't say what it is. And it is such a good-looking plot as well, easily the highest production values of any pilot Oh Yeah! Cartoons had to offer, almost like a more stylized version of Longhair and Doubledome (another pilot I really liked). Hell, the music in this was provided by none other than Slash! That's might explain why it was never picked up if he was to do all the music, y'know, costs and all that... but I’m still happy I got to find this beauty after so long!

i REMEMBER this! My favorite little dialogue was this:

"So... Dad's manhood challenge..."

"Yep. That's right. Dad was saved by his best friend in the whole wide world, Pure Dumb Luck."

Or at least something along the lines of that.
