With something like Squidbillies, you can't expect too much given it looks super crude, uses a lot of hillbilly stereotypes and generally is a very alienating show. But I personally love it! Yes, the episode "Taint Misbehavin'" I ripped apart way back didn't do this show justice at all. Despite how crude this show is, it is capable of telling some damn good stories and even knows when to mix serous moments with the off the wall comedy. This was the very first half hour episode of the show, promoted as a big musical event with a lot of famous country singers guest starring, and I'd have to say they really did go all-out for this!
What y'all need to remember is Early Cuyler is voiced by a professional singer. Stuart Daniel Baker a.k.a. "Unknown Hinson" is one of the funniest country singers I've ever heard and one of the few I actually admire for his craft. I'm not big into country music, but the ones I know like Brad Paisley are really good. So alongside his wicked guitar skills, you can imagine that voice can belch out some killer songs! Actually, the cast here does a wonderful job singing some pretty funny tunes; I especially have to admire Dana Snyder of all people as Granny Cuyler basically singing about a combo Yellow Cake exchange and dating scam.
And the plot they chose for this musical outing is a good'n! Al-Qaeda has invaded Dougal County with the prospect of Yellow Cake on their minds! This is one of those kinds of things you have to see for yourself just to see how off the rails this gets. I mean, they have some great talent in this thing, but I don't want to give away every song or joke because I want more people to appreciate this show! Just know they have a song about al-Qaeda taking credit for everything from global diarrhea to women's time of the month sung by professional country singers! Hell, they even got Krystal in in this mess!
So in short: The chicken was good!
